DO’S & DON’TS FOR YOUNG CHINCHILLAS

Young chinchillas are extra delicate little fluffballs

PLAYTIME

Under 6 months:

Young chinchillas should not have free-roam playtime.

That means no playpens, bathrooms, or running loose outside the cage.

They can be gently taken out to be held and cuddled — just no running around yet.

Why?

Baby chinchillas can’t regulate their body temperature or blood sugar very well. Too much activity can cause:

  • Overheating

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)

Both of which can be very serious.

Introducing Playtime (6+ months):

Start slow and build up gradually:

  • Begin with 10 minutes per day

  • Slowly increase to 30 minutes per day by 1 year old

Slow and steady keeps playtime fun and safe

TREATS

Under 6 months:

No treats yet — including cheerios, shredded wheat, oats, or dried herbs.

Why?

Baby chinchillas have tiny stomachs. Treats can fill them up too quickly, leaving no room for:

  • Hay

  • Pellets

These are essential for proper growth and nutrition during this critical stage.

Introducing Treats (6+ months):

Treats can be added sparingly and in tiny portions:

  • A few cheerios = okay

  • One shredded wheat square = plenty

Moderation is key

WHEELS

Under 6 months:

No wheels for young chinchillas.

Why?

Just like playtime, running too much can lead to:

  • Overheating

  • Low blood sugar

Young chins may overdo it without realizing their limits.

Introducing a Wheel (6+ months):

Once your chin is old enough:

  • Watch closely at first

  • If they run nonstop or seem overexcited, remove the wheel

  • Offer it only for short periods until they’re older

Safety first — even during zoomies
