Chinchilla Cage Safety & Setup

(What every chin parent should know)

Many people believe chinchillas need tall cages, but this comes from a common misunderstanding. While chinchillas can jump, they aren’t natural jumpers in the wild. They are rock hoppers, moving across rocky terrain with gentle slopes and low ledges.

In nature, chinchillas navigate uneven ground—not vertical drops—so cage design should focus on safety and stability, not height.

Can Chinchillas Jump?

Yes

But they’re not very coordinated

Because of this, limiting fall risks is one of the most important parts of chinchilla care.

Metal cages only

No wood cage.

No plastic cage.

Chinchillas chew everything—and chewing is healthy and necessary for their teeth.

Pine shelves = dental care

Pine helps keep teeth trimmed naturally. Shelves will need replacing, and that’s normal. Learning to make your own shelves can save a lot of money

Wider is better than taller

If you have a tall cage (Critter Nation or Ferret Nation):

Keep the center divider in place

Add pine or metal shelves

They rely heavily on muscle memory

Constantly rearranging shelves can confuse them

Confusion leads to missed hopsMissed hops can cause falls and injuries

Consistency = safety

Anti-pill fleece ONLY

Cotton & nylon fabrics have threads that can wrap around toes, legs, necks, or fingers—causing serious injuries.

Most chins won’t chew fleece. If yours does, it’s safest to skip hammocks entirely.

Covering plastic pans with fleece is okay

Just be sure to wash and replace it every couple of days.

Bar floors with litter pans underneath are safe

No fleece covering needed.
